National Athletic Training Month

March 25, 2015

The GBC Wellness Center strives to provide the highest quality staff members to work with our members. With that being said, we don’t have a single personal trainer on our staff… You may be wondering, how is that possible? In our MedFit Center we employ exercise physiologists, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS), Medical Exercise Specialists (MES), and Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) to work one-on-one with our members.

March is National Athletic Training Month, so we wanted to highlight why we feel an ATC is an asset to our facility and our members.

Athletic trainers must graduate from an accredited baccalaureate or master’s program before they are allowed to sit for the national certification exam. All ATCs have a bachelor’s degree, and 70 percent of ATCs have a master’s degree. An athletic trainer is an expert at recognizing, treating and preventing musculoskeletal injuries. Academic curriculum and clinical training follow the medical model. They must meet continuing education requirements set by the Board of Certification, Inc., and adhere to the requirements of a state licensing board. ATCs are in demand for their versatile wellness services, and injury and illness prevention skills. An ATC is skilled in manual therapy and similar treatments for musculoskeletal conditions. They commonly supervise obese clients and patients to safely improve their health and fitness, and work with patients with asthma, diabetes, heart disease and other health conditions.

GBC Wellness Center employs Ashley Sigwalt, MS ATC as an Athletic Trainer for our facility.  Ashley is also a Certified in Facial Movement Taping (FMT) which is used to treat injuries and pain.
